Northland vineyards, brewers, distillers, coffee roasters and hospitality venues have grabbed the opportunity to shine a light on the region’s beverage industry this October, submitting an incredible programme of tastings, tours, special one-off events, culinary collaborations, and immersive workshops for the inaugural Savour Northland.

The challenge was set across Tai Tokerau to showcase the very best that the north has to offer and invite our locals and visitors to the region to experience the food, beverages and produce that make this sub-tropical paradise so special.

The Trip to Sip is a major part of the Savour Northland programme. Northland is the oldest wine growing region in the country, with Samuel Marsden planting New Zealand’s first vines 205 years ago this week in Kerikeri. Around 30 vineyards are located here, producing wines that are world-class award winners such as The Landing, Marsden Estate, 144 Islands and Dancing Petrel.

Local brewers are also making waves, with PHAT House and Bay of Islands Brewing in the Far North and recently crowned Champion Medium Brewery, McLeod’s, in Waipu. These breweries will feature in many of our collaboration events, tap takeovers, beer fests and tours.

Black Collar Distillery in Kerikeri are scooping up the accolades for their hand-crafted, natural spirits and will feature in multiple Trip to Sip cocktail events as well as our other boutique distillers, Papaka Road and tuitui gin by Brookelane Vineyard. We even have our very own local Hard Iced Tea by Drew & Taylors of Whangarei.

For the non-drinkers, our coffee roasters Sabio (Whangarei) and Max (Bay of Islands) are running workshops on the art of coffee cupping and Waipu’s Epic Coffee feature in our Savour Northland Challenge with an incredible iced americano created by Origin Northland, made with Northland oranges and a cold cheese foam made from local macadamia nuts and Belle Chèvre goat cheese.

Even smoothies make an appearance in the programme, packed with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, or have a real taste of history with soda’s made from grapefruits picked in the orchard at our nations oldest building in Kerikeri.

“We originally hoped to see around 50 events in our first year” explains Savour Northland Creative Director Jackie Sanders, “We have been blown away with the collaboration, creativity and passion from the local restaurants, cafes, brewers, vineyards, heritage sites and producers, with over 125 amazing events listed, plus the innovative entries into the Savour Northland Challenge!”

Savour Northland runs from 4 – 28 October and has been developed in collaboration with the local hospitality and producer industry, with seed funding support from Northland Inc and the Regional Events Fund.
