IN BRIEF
Get ready to turn up the flavour volume on your old favourites and discover the sandwich you didn’t know you were waiting for.
WHY CHOOSE THIS RESTAURANT?
Goldie’s is just what Napier and the beautiful Hawke’s Bay have been needing. Casual, fun, seriously delicious and not fancy, it’s easy to walk into for comfortable, excellent food.
ABOUT THE CHEF
Chef and co-owner Grant Soeberg has been cooking since he was 17 and honed his skills at some impressive establishments including The French Café , Elephant Hill and Black Estate. At Goldie’s he is dishing up casual comfort with a side-serve of cleverness that can push a classic beyond its borders. With a knack for spotting premium local flavours, his deceptively simple menu is one to visit often.
ABOUT THE MENU
It’s just the right size. Small enough to tell you that everything will be spankingly fresh but not too small to leave you feeling needy. On the way in, a regular advised us not to miss the chicken sandwich and you can tell a lot about a restaurant by the sandwich it keeps. Piled between two super-thick pillows of Tip Top White is a premium treatment of a filling that makes the chicken sandwich of your dreams. A hot, honey-crisp chicken schnitzel with crunchy lettuce, pickle and Kewpie that may sound simple but is intensely good – even more effective with fries and a cheeky glass of prosecco. You might fancy the whole fish of the day with Grant’s flavour-packed red chimichurri or the beef tartare tostada spiced with a kimchi ketchup and served on glorious 100% natural corn tortillas made in Napier by Hands Down. Whole, gnarly, chilli garlic tiger prawns come dressed in a green mayo as do the potato and chipotle taquitos. Unpretentious and beautifully cooked, each plate contains a little of Grant’s element of bling.
ABOUT THE TEAM
Co-owner Alice Soeberg heads up front of house with a small but mighty team and a welcome that will make you feel like a regular from the minute you walk in the door.
OF NOTE
Family-friendly is an understatement – the kids’ menu is spot-on and, judging by the colourful crayon-filled pages adorning the walls, Goldie’s is a haven for creativity for the littlies as well as perfectly cooked food, hot chips and icy-cold beer for the grown-ups.
