Prosecco
Italian and Aussie proseccos dominate, but watch out – New Zealand is catching up.
There is no doubt that the popularity of prosecco has skyrocketed over the last few years and it has to be said that the quality has risen to match. In this part of the world we are starting to see Australia standing toe to toe with the north of Italy – from where the glera grape originates – and Australian proseccos have topped this category in the past. This year, however, Italy got her nose in front. Salute Italia!
Most excitingly, for the first time we saw a Gisborne wine making it into the top ranking. Glera grape plantings in New Zealand are recent, so while today we see one homegrown prosecco, over the next few years we may see even more ending up on the table in front of the judges, competing against Italy and Australia for the coveted top spot. Make no mistake, when that happens, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Bandini Prosecco DOC NV (Veneto, Italy)
It never surprises me when I learn a winemaker is born into a wine family; in fact it makes perfect sense, as winemaking is so much more than a job, it’s a passion. Bandini winemaker Marco Flacco is one such experienced winemaker who started as a winemaking student in 1977 working alongside his father and then in 1987 became part of the Bandini winemaking team.
While Marco is a consultant winemaker for many different brands throughout Italy, he is based in the Veneto – the home of prosecco – and speaks often about how a love for home reflects the bond we have for the land, which represents a priceless heritage: one which he feels winemaking honours in a sustainable and respectful way.
That level of love and skill is definitely reflected in this prosecco, made with 100% glera grapes. This wine is very attractive with pipfruit, white florals and hints of honeysuckle on the nose. Purity of fruit is evident on the palate, which is well weighted with sweetness that is very well balanced by the refreshing acidity which also gives the wine vivacity. One sip will transport you to northern Italian hills. (A)
