This cosy, experimental Danish top spot goes way beyond the usual café experience. Some impossible flavour combos work their way into every heartening dish. Lovely warm service, too. Schnapps is a particular speciality. Like the food, it’s all house-made – with much love.

Best Cafe

Believe us when we say this is simply the best. Formica tables, sliced bread, slaw and chips served as standard with fish, burgers and oysters so fresh you could weep with delight. And it’s licensed. No wonder Dunedin’s best-kept secret has been running since 1932.

Bracken

It feels like you’re eating in your favourite aunt’s dining room in this restored villa – and the delectable morsels just keep coming. There’s a Scottish theme, too; you can bet your Robbie Burns the flavour combinations will be superbly executed. Choose the dégustation option if you want interesting wines matched to each course.

Dosa etc.

The freshest, grooviest South Indian tastes served in snappy surrounds. Splendidly executed dosas predominate with zingy additions and blackboard specials included. Vego is the way to go. Seriously dreamy Indian dishes served with great pride and in-depth knowledge of exactly how to do it right.

Prohibition Smokehouse

Carnivores rejoice – nothing meaty is forbidden in this hot-off-the-grill eatery where a love of meat takes top billing. Dry-ageing lockers, a southern-style barbecue in an open-kitchen: the theatre precedes the taste. Get down to the real deal with cuts such as tomahawk or T-bone and marvellous, marbled wagyu.

Woof! Bar

Opulence just outside the Octagon. Cyndi Lauper visited this welcoming address – and it rocks in its own right. A carefully curated drinks list weds well with accompanying bar bites. Woof! adds a fresh touch to the Dunedin scene; staff are attuned to your every need.
