For the past year our NIWA-Haku Kingfish Champion for Change for 2023 has been absolutely flat out like a skink drinking. Aside from running an impressive portfolio of restaurants and inspiring us all by building a hospitality team around him that is passionate and confident, it’s Ben Bayly’s work in the telling of a uniquely New Zealand food story, his dedication to upcycle food into a range of dynamic products instead of letting it go to waste, his rescue of The Secret Garden – a much-loved organic farm in Patumahoe, South Auckland – and, most recently, his outstanding approach to changing the narrative for people living with dementia, that demonstrates a great vision for the future and is a win-win for all of us. For jumping into so many worthwhile projects that propel us forward in such a positive way, it is with great pleasure that this important award goes to New Zealand chef and restaurateur Ben Bayly (pictured above).
