ABOUT THE FOOD

An extensive seafood menu plus a few dishes for the non-fish eater. The grilled crayfish is a must-order if it̕ s on while the pāua croquette with yoghurt and curry sauce and the poached groper belly with kedgeree risotto are both just a little bit flash, but tasty and comforting. For afters, raspberry baked Alaska is the bomb. The beverage choice does justice to New Zealand and the cocktail list is superior and well considered.

ABOUT THE CHEF

Executive chef Simon Levy started his career in the UK and was head chef at one of Gordon Ramsay’s London restaurants. Local accolades include 1 Hat, for Inati, in the Cuisine Good Food Awards and ‘Outstanding Chef of the Year’ at the Canterbury Hospitality Awards. His food stems from the classics but pays homage to the best ingredients New Zealand has to offer. Head chef Cian Curtin is doing a stellar job following Simon’s lead.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Husband-and- wife duo Lisa and Simon Levy’s attention to detail and pursuit of greatness shines brightly in their second Christchurch restaurant. Hali offers a more relaxed bistro style than their reputed and innovative fine-dining restaurant Inati. The navy-tiled, open kitchen provides a hypnotic backdrop to the busy but ever-calm kitchen team, and with well-versed and friendly staff, guests are instantly in safe hands. Cocktail lovers should talk to bar manager, Daniel, who loves to chat about his craft.

OF NOTE

The bright, chic bar is located on the first floor and open for drinks and snacks. Take the aquarium- like glass elevator or the grand staircase to the stylish bistro upstairs, where even the bathrooms are in theme, wallpapered with an underwater scene and with soft-piped music from David Attenborough’s The Blue Planet playing.
